From SR100 to SR300: How Rising Mobility Costs Are Affecting Pilgrims at Masjid al-Haram

Jeddah – Mobility services at Masjid al-Haram in Mecca have recently become a topic of discussion among pilgrims, following noticeable changes in pricing and payment procedures.

During Ramadan last year, the official golf cart service for the complete Umrah — including Tawaf and Sa’i — was priced at SR100 per person. This year, pilgrims report that the same service now costs SR300 per person, representing a threefold increase within just one year.

For many visitors, particularly elderly pilgrims and those with health conditions, these services are not optional conveniences but essential support that enables them to complete their Umrah with dignity and comfort.

Wheelchair Services and Limited Alternatives

In addition to golf carts, manual wheelchairs with attendants — commonly referred to by pilgrims as “captains” — are available at approximately SR200 for a full Umrah, (including Tawaf and Sa’i. ) While this service provides valuable physical assistance, the cost remains significant for families traveling with multiple elderly members.

Pilgrims also note that electric scooters, which were available two years ago and offered independent mobility, are currently no longer accessible inside the Haram. The absence of this option has reduced flexibility for visitors who may not require full-time assistance but are unable to walk long distances.

Card-Only Payment Policy

Another practical adjustment is the implementation of a card-only payment system for golf cart bookings. Cash payments are not accepted.

While digital payment systems improve organization and efficiency, some elderly pilgrims or visitors from countries where card usage is limited may face unexpected challenges if unaware of this requirement.

To avoid inconvenience, pilgrims are advised to book in advance through the official Alharam App, https://alharamain.gov.sa/  or https://carts.alharamain.gov.sa/ which allows users to reserve services and secure availability during peak seasons.

Balancing Modernization and Accessibility

Masjid al-Haram welcomes millions of pilgrims annually, and managing such vast numbers requires structured systems, technological integration, and operational resources. Continuous development efforts reflect ongoing initiatives to enhance the overall pilgrimage experience.

At the same time, maintaining affordability in essential mobility services remains an important consideration. Many pilgrims save for years to undertake this sacred journey. For elderly worshippers in particular, accessible and reasonably priced assistance plays a crucial role in preserving the spiritual focus of their visit.

Conclusion

The increase from SR100 to SR300 for the complete Umrah golf cart service, the SR200 wheelchair option, the absence of electric scooters, and the transition to card-only payments highlight the evolving structure of mobility services within the Haram.

As pilgrimage numbers continue to grow, clear communication, transparent pricing, and accessible options will help ensure that every pilgrim — regardless of age or physical ability — can perform Umrah with dignity, ease, and peace of mind.
